A few weeks ago, I told you about the Four C's: Clarity, Comfort, Cost of Living, Certainty. A lot of you told me that framework helped. But here's the thing I didn't say clearly enough — money is only half the story. You can have your finances completely sorted and still feel lost. Still feel like you don't quite know who you are anymore.
So today, the other four C's. The psychological ones: Curiosity, Communication, Contribution, and Creation.
C #1: Curiosity
For 40 years, my job kept me curious whether I liked it or not — new problems, new questions, new things to figure out. When that structure disappeared, I realized curiosity doesn't come looking for you anymore. You have to go looking for it. For me that's meant learning things I have no practical use for, just because they're interesting. Curiosity is what keeps your mind from going quiet.
C #2: Communication
I've talked before about the friendship recession after 60. Communication is the antidote — not the passive kind, not just replying to a text eventually. Real communication. Reaching out first. Saying the honest thing instead of the easy thing. It gets harder as you get older, not easier, which is exactly why it has to become a habit, on purpose.
C #3: Contribution
For most of my life, contribution was built into my job description. I had a role; people depended on what I did. When that ended, I had to find new ways to feel useful. It didn't have to be big — it just had to be real. Being the person my family leans on for our history and our stories. Showing up for a friend. Contribution is what makes you feel like you still matter to something outside yourself.
C #4: Creation
This one is close to my heart. Creation is what beadwork became for me — what this channel became for me. There's something about making a thing that didn't exist before that reminds you you're still becoming, not just aging. It doesn't have to be art. A garden. A recipe. A story written down for your grandkids. Creation is proof you're still here, still building something.
Putting It All Together
Curiosity. Communication. Contribution. Creation. Put those together with Clarity, Comfort, Cost of Living, and Certainty, and that's the whole framework — eight words I've built my retirement around. Not because I had it all figured out. I didn't. I still don't, some days. But having the words for what I'm missing makes it a lot easier to go looking for it.
Which of these four do you need more of right now? I'd love to hear in the comments. And if you missed it, the financial Four C's post is a good companion to this one.
